For those of you looking for incredibly loud walls of melodious majestic sound with which to deafen yourselves The Sunshine Factory has confected a sugary short-list of songs. The band offers the Sugar EP at a name your price bargain on their website thesunshinefactory.bandcamp.com. The music is highly orchestrated power shoegaze replete with pedaled ambiance and seraphim vocals. They hail from Mobile, Alabama and will be driving northward in March to play Trash Bar, a local Williamsburg bar in Brooklyn. Trash Bar is located South of Metropolitan of Grand between Roebling and Driggs, and conveniently across the street from my apartment and my favorite restaurant, so I really have no reason to miss this one. Of course these guys have a heavy dose of My Bloody Valentine influence, and they’d do well to seek out the likes of Chicago’s Airiel, that is if they are still making music-I need to check in with them, or local NES shoegaze outfit Depreciation Guild. The arts pace known as Secret Project Robot, by the water off Metropolitan in Williamsburg, welcomed their guests with a baby pool full of taurine laced energy drinks. While this was on its face a seemingly dubious display of corporate sponsorship, their presence was entirely appropriate. Energy was requisite. The music space exuded a “do it yourself” aesthetic in everything from the door-lady drawing hearts on the hands of patron who shelled out the $8, to the cheap vodka and whiskey or the large bucket of iced two liter mixers behind a small slab of a bar manned by a particularly festive cross-dresser and another barkeep, who I am sure would have been worth describing had his look not been so overshadowed by the slutty red lipstick and stuffed brazier. So too it went with the bands who performed; all had promise, all had songs worth listening to, all were experimental and dynamic, but all were outshone by the final clamorous fashion of These Are Powers.
In yet another sticky scenario, Secret Project Robot’s stagnant heat was oppressive, but they had sprinklers spouting off in plastic tubs so at least we knew they were thinking about us. Bill Salas stood behind his drum kit with a console of electronic rhythm pads, infusing the natural resonance of an open snare with manufactured blips and bops. Pat Noecker, ex-bassist for The Liars, wielded his instrument with genius pomp. His bass had been modified to produce an array of shrieks and moans; his contribution at times imitated the demolition of a 40 story building, other times it shot through the room like an auditory emanation of a laser cannon. And then there was Anna Barie. Part bean-shìdh, part international world-music pop star, Anna chanted smooth and cool, bobbling a rhythmic voice through wicker work of the drums and bass. She would volley steamy sighs down on an already moist mass of dancing limbs and then pull back with a low pitched croon.
The energy of These Are Powers is simply incredible. They have released a couple of records; their latest All Aboard Future, was released on Dead Oceans in February of 2008. The alchemy of these three musicians produces a refined and potent power from seemingly disconnected parts. As a group, These Are Powers function together with a rare sense of theater, fashion, and ragged opulence. For any avid show-seeker, These Are Powers are a must. Apparently the Chinese love them too…

So electronic artist Fluorescent Grey out of California believes he has discovered a link between Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and bits and pieces of MJ’s catalog. Here is what he posted this morning:
“for those unaware of this piece of music history trivia, Michael Jackson was hired by Sega to compose the music for sonic the hedgehog 3, for whatever reason he was let go from the project. Sega ended up using the songs anyways with minor changes done to them, and Michel Jackson himself used several of these original versions to later make the hits ‘Black and White’ ‘Remember the Time’ and ‘Jam’. Most of the Sonic music was sped up to double time and keys changed. I made adjustments to each song to match them up with one another.
Since MJ is dead now we will probably never know the actual truth about what happened, but as i listen to more Dangerous and post Dangerous Michael Jackson i keep imagining Michael Jackson busting out some awesome sega genesis fm synthesis music and taking it just as seriously as he would one of his hit singles and i respect him a lot for that.”
Fluorescent Grey has created a blog to distribute is reconstructions that contrast Sonic 3′s music with MJ lyrics etc. They are most definitely worth a listen and you will want them at you’re next party. They are sick! Click the links below.
Is it true? This might not be a hoax, but it certainly could be a cleverly and intentionally perpetuated conspiracy theory with little or no merit. But if something interesting comes of it, then I suppose who cares…

“Don’t Stop—Just Slow Down”
This motto on the cover of Brian Ellis’ newest project speaks volumes. Yellow Light District, due to be released as a limited series of 500 individually numbered 12” vinyl in July, is vintage sonic pornography for those who get a hard-on when they listen to the likes of the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack, or are obsessed with 1988’s Bloodsport…err anything Jean-Claude Van Damme. This record is no conservative, veiled throwback; it is a neon headband inspired synth-feast.
I listened to the LP while jogging through industrial Bushwick and Williamsburg. I quickly transformed into Little Mac training for my final bout with Mike Tyson in NES’ Punch-Out. Yellow Light District’s most penetrating hook is its style; It isn’t intellectual—it isn’t professorial—it is its own weird science. The first track, Theme, flawlessly begins the record with rolling waves of soft synth melodies that eventually starburst into a dance floor beat, textured with free form keyboards. As every track passes, Mr. E never lets up, always reintroducing the listener to an era some wish was long forgotten. But like the venerable Dov Charney seems to believe, some things don’t die for a reason, and there should always be those creatives out there to remind us why.

New York City’s Paper Garden Records is treating us during the month of May by putting together a couple shows that showcase three of the labels more promising acts. On Monday, May 20th Peasant, one of our favorite song writers attached to Paper Garden will play along side Omaha, Nebraska’s Midwest Dilemma. This will be a doubly sweet night— not only am I eager to see Midwest Dilemma live, but Peasant is definitely always satisfying to watch. He cannot be overstated. It is my understanding that Justin Lamoureux of Midwest Dilemma will be playing solo, which will likely be a nice compliment to Peasant‘s set. Did I mention it is FREE? The show will take place at The Living Room on Ludlow.
The vaudevillian circus sideshow that is Darla Farmer team up with electro-pop orchestrators Emanuel & the Fear for an early gig at Mercury Lounge on May 23rd. The doors open at 7:30PM, with Darla Farmer offering their velveteen texture at 8PM, followed by Emanuel & the Fear at 9PM. For those of you who have not attended an early show at Mercury Lounge, it is a great way to begin a Saturday night. Your ass is out of their by 10:30PM, perfect if you have a party to get to in Bushwick, Greenpoint or Williamsburg. Both bands are attached to Paper Garden and are certainly worth a listen.

Ontario illectronic indie dance meisters Green Go have released a remix album of their favorite fellow Canadian acts including Women, The D’Ubervilles, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Gentlemen Reg, and our favorite Born Ruffians. These tunes are a taste of their fuzz filled style. The band sports their original music on their Myspace page, which I find to be twice as interesting as their remixes, but this record of reworks is certainly worth a listen. It will give you a taste of what’s to come this month as they release their debut LP, Borders. So Cheers, and enjoy! We hope to report on their release this month.

The darkly sensual style that is both consumed and created in Europe’s thriving electro-indie rock scene has sent another beautiful band stateside. Recorded at Planet Rock studios in Berlin under the supervision of Rob Kirwan of U2 and Depeche Mode fame, Lovebites is a supremely focused record by Germany’s Super 700. Ibadet Ramadani’s vocals nicely compliment the somber strings and opiate waves of the Marrakeshian melodies. Lovebites shuttles between a flurry of epic aesthetics and the slow, sexy romance of an Ian Fleming spy novel. One can imagine a kaleidoscopic image pouring a deep red velvet color over barely perceivable undressed bodies when listening to Super 700.
The band avoids the awkward distraction that sometimes occurs when German vocalists sing in English. They do this not by avoiding the language, but by perfecting it. Some might compare Super 700 to Blonde Redhead, but this would be yet another lazy juxtaposition. While both bands have an affinity for thematically dark songwriting, Super 700 clearly aims toward the accessibility of Sade. As a complete work Lovebites flows from song to song, mimicking the motion of an oil filled hourglass; it is cohesive, each song belonging to the other. The record does not contain the most original or provocative material, but it excels as a mysterious and beautiful work, entirely worth our attention.

Oliver Strummer, as he is known to his mother, put out a 12” with one of our favorite electronic labels Record Label Records. His 4 track beat graffiti called Also Spoke Zerothruster is a versatile soundscape. Its function and form has the twitchy clicks of acidic electronica, but these rhythmic sequences are enveloped in the ambient spaces of white noise and clipped vocals. Nothing is perhaps the most tempo-regular track of the record. While it might be too cavernous to be played by itself in a club setting, like other tracks on the record, these beats will be attractive to disc jockeys looking for perfect production of abstract sequencing. It will add a unique mélange to any standard set, disobeying the cookie cutter formulations of so much of electronic music.
Also Spoke Zerothruster continues with Extinction Event, a broad combination fast paced bass beats, even faster tweeter piercing accents, and pitch oscillating noises. The track fluctuates between steady, danceable rhythms and individualistic synth melodies. At times Extinction Event reminds me of Peter and the Wolf as conceived of in the world of Tron. The final track, Who Shot the Jazz Drummer, is Tomoroh Hidari at his most ethereal. This dream-state recollection of some jazz moment is almost completely devoid of rhythm. There is virtually no drum, save the occasional bass jimbay and iron pot and spoon dull chime. As short as it is, Also Spoke Zerothruster is a multifaceted, multifocal collection.
