Allow me to introduce you to the Pacific Northwest’s Common Market, comprised of rapper RA Scion and DJ Sabzi. Now this isn’t your gin and juice drinker’s hip hop. No, these are moonshine, shrimp eating beats that speak to the value of service and respect, ala Tribe. This music is a post Katrina mantra, reaffirming a rhythm that can only be born of tuba bumps and bass drum beats. Ra Scion’s lyrics are the smartest of any I’ve heard. He’s like a rapping Colin Maloy without the privateer references, or the nerdy look, or obsession with literature for that matter. He looks like lumber jack and has the intellect of a social justice scholar. The Winter’s End EP clearly seeks to draw the genre of Hip Hop away from the formulaic degeneracy that it currently infected with.
